How Does Geothermal Energy Work? A Complete Guide to Energy from Beneath the Ground

Geothermal energy has established itself as one of the most stable, efficient and sustainable renewable energy sources available today. If you are wondering how geothermal energy works to heat and cool your home or business, this technology not only harnesses the earth’s inexhaustible heat but can also significantly increase your energy savings.

Unlike other systems that depend on outdoor weather conditions, geothermal energy takes advantage of a fundamental constant: the temperature below ground remains stable throughout the year, regardless of the season.

What is geothermal energy, and how does it actually work?

Geotermia que es

Geothermal energy involves extracting heat from beneath the earth’s surface to make our homes comfortable. Based on water-to-water heat pumps, this system can deliver four to five times the electrical energy it consumes as thermal energy, achieving a coefficient of performance (COP) of 4 to 5.

The process has three main stages:

1. Energy capture

The process begins with geothermal boreholes or buried collectors. A heat transfer fluid flows through them and absorbs heat from the ground, whose temperature remains constant throughout the year.

2. Heat exchange and amplification

The captured energy reaches the geothermal heat pump, where a thermodynamic cycle raises its temperature and makes the heat available to the building’s distribution system (underfloor heating, radiators or fan coils).

3. Distribution and control

Thanks to the heat pumps’ advanced technology, the following can be managed simultaneously:

  • Heating: For complete comfort in winter.
  • Cooling: Both active and passive cooling for the warmer months.
  • Domestic hot water (DHW): Produced with high energy efficiency.

Advantages of Ecoforest geothermal systems

Ecoforest leads the market with the most comprehensive range of geothermal heat pumps, standing out for its continuous innovation. By choosing a geothermal system, you gain access to cutting-edge technologies:

  • Refrigerant innovation: In December 2020, Ecoforest became the first European manufacturer to launch a geothermal heat pump using natural refrigerant R290, with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of just 3, making it the most environmentally friendly option.
  • Inverter technology: All our heat pumps feature variable-speed Scroll compressors that adjust output to actual demand, extending equipment life and optimizing energy consumption.
  • Solar PV integration: Our systems are compatible with solar energy, enabling intelligent management of the balance between production and consumption to achieve a net-zero energy balance.
  • HTR (High Temperature Recovery) technology: This makes it possible to use waste heat to produce high-temperature DHW (up to 75–80°C) at virtually no additional cost during cooling cycles.

Solutions for every need

Not all installations are the same. At Ecoforest, we have developed solutions tailored to every type of project:

  • ecoGEO+ PRO range: Ideal for single-family homes, offering maximum efficiency and suitable even for indoor installation.
  • ecoGEO+ HP (High Power) range: Designed specifically for multi-family buildings, hotels and large premises, with the ability to operate in a cascade configuration up to 600 kW.

Are you ready to switch to the most efficient and stable heating and cooling solution on the market? If you would like to learn more about how this technology can improve your home’s efficiency, we invite you to explore our range of geothermal heat pumps and discover why we are a technology leader in renewable energy.
