How to clean your pellet stove

Pellet stoves are gaining ground over other types of heating due to their high calorific value and optimum performance. To ensure their good performance, pellet stoves need simple maintenance tasks that are  necessary to ensure the security and performance of the Ecoforest equipment. So, if you have a pellet stove, we want to show you how to clean it so that it works as well as possible for as long as possible.

What do you need to clean a pellet stove?

Cleaning your pellet stove does not require extensive knowledge of its structure and operation, but you do need to have some tools at your disposal. In addition to the cleaning brush that comes with all Ecoforest stoves, you will also need a vacuum cleaner, Ecoforest glass cleaner, gloves, a mask and some clothes to keep the space around the stove as clean as possible when the fireplace is opened.

Starting the pellet stove cleaning process

Stoves require daily cleaning and weekly cleaning which can be carried out by the users. Always make sure that the stove is cold before cleaning.

On models with a heat exchanger (e.g. Vigo II or Eco I) operate the rake handles with the door closed so that the ash falls into the stove after every use.

Also daily, clean the burning pot and the burning pot holder with a vacuum cleaner. Make sure that no debris is left in the holes of the basket. For models with a fixed burning pot, use a vacuum cleaner to clean it. In addition, clean the glass with the Ecoforest glass cleaning liquid. Lastly, empty ashtray box and hoover its location.

Once a week and also when the stove is cold, empty the burning pot. In addition, in stoves with a top plate (e.g. Vigo III, Creta or Lyon) push up the top plate of the fireplace, until the tabs that fix it to the central plate are unfastened, and then pull it out. This way you will have a better access to the heat exchanger and you will be able to clean it thoroughly. Consult the details of these operations in the Ecoforest manuals provided by your installer, which are also available in the product details on our website.

How often to clean the pellet stove

The pellet stove must be cleaned frequently to ensure that it functions properly. How often it is cleaned depends, above all, on how many hours you use it per day and for how long.

In addition to daily care, the stove should be cleaned once a year or when it has consumed 500 kg of fuel. The annual inspection and cleaning ensures that the stove is in perfect condition, prolongs its service life and maintains its efficiency. Contact your installer to carry out this maintenance task, that will keep the different ducts and parts of the pellet stove in perfect condition.

With this care, you can extend the service life of your pellet stove. With daily cleaning and annual servicing, your pellet stove will work optimally for a long period of time.
