Requirements, Space and Necessary Work

Before asking for a quote, almost everyone asks the same question: will this work in my home? It is a reasonable concern, because there is a widespread belief that installing an air-source heat pump means tearing up the floor, replacing every radiator and undertaking a complete renovation. In most cases, that is not true, but not every home is an ideal candidate either.

In this guide, we go through the actual requirements for installing an air-to-water heat pump in a home, one by one: space, heat emitters, electrical installation, permits and building work. We also look at the cases where it is worth thinking twice.

Quick answer: the 5 requirements that really matter

A ventilated outdoor space for the unit: a terrace, garden, patio, roof or wall with a suitable support. An area of around 1 m² is enough.

A water circuit: radiators, underfloor heating or fan coils. If you already have a water-based heating system, 80% of the work is done.

A small indoor space for the hydraulic unit and, if you want domestic hot water, the storage tank.

Sufficient electrical supply and a distribution board in good condition.

Permission to install the outdoor unit if you live in a shared building or a protected area.

If your home meets all five requirements, it is suitable. The rest concerns system sizing, not feasibility.

Ecoforest air-to-water heat pump installed at a home.

1. Outdoor space: how much you really need

Ecoforest’s air-to-water range consists of monobloc systems: all the components of the refrigerant circuit are inside the outdoor unit, and the connection to the home is exclusively hydraulic. This has two important practical consequences:

No refrigerant pipes run through the house, only water pipes.

Installation is simpler, and the risk of a refrigerant leak inside the home is reduced.

As for dimensions, the most compact model in the range, the ecoAIR+ 1-7 PRO, measures 823 × 1050 × 435 mm (width × height × depth). In other words, it takes up roughly the same amount of space as a washing machine, but outdoors. At the other end of the range, the ecoAIR+ EVI 4-20, designed for larger homes or higher demand, measures 1254 × 1350 × 625 mm.

What you should check in your case:

That there is open air around the unit: it draws heat from the outdoor air and releases colder air. If you enclose it in an unventilated space, it will recirculate its own air and lose efficiency. The specific minimum clearances are given in each model’s installation manual.

That the base is firm and level, and raised slightly above the ground to prevent defrost water from accumulating.

That there is a drain for condensate in winter.

That the location is accessible for maintenance.

You do not need: a plant room, a dedicated utility room or a reinforced roof in a standard single-family home.

2. Heat emitters: do I have to replace the radiators?

This is the question that holds most people back, and the one surrounded by the most misinformation.

A conventional air-to-water heat pump works well at low temperatures (underfloor heating, 35-45 °C) but struggles with older radiators designed for 70-80 °C. That is where the myth that you have to tear up the floor comes from.

Ecoforest addressed this by using natural R290 refrigerant (propane) throughout its ecoAIR+ PRO range. Thanks to this, these units produce flow water at over 70 °C without needing to activate backup electric heaters—temperatures similar to those of a gas or oil boiler. In practice, you can keep your existing radiators, including cast-iron or aluminium radiators from an older installation.

Heat emitters compatible with the ecoAIR+ range include:

Heat emitter

Compatible

Comment

Underfloor heating

Yes

The most efficient combination

Low-temperature radiators

Yes

Excellent performance

Conventional radiators (aluminium, cast iron)

Yes

Possible thanks to R290 and temperatures >70 °C

Fan coils

Yes

Provide heating and cooling through the same emitter

Split air-conditioning units

No

These are air-to-air systems and do not share the circuit

The honest qualification: possible does not necessarily mean optimal. The higher the flow temperature, the lower the seasonal efficiency. If your radiators have very little spare capacity, a competent installer will suggest increasing the size of an emitter in the coldest rooms or adding a fan coil, rather than forcing the heat pump to run at maximum output all the time. That is a targeted change, not a renovation.

Explore this topic further in our guide to air-to-water heat pumps in older flats with radiators.

3. Indoor space: the hydraulic unit and domestic hot water

Because it is a monobloc system, the indoor components are minimal. Depending on the configuration you choose:

Heating and cooling only: a small hydraulic module and the control panel are enough.

Heating + domestic hot water: you need a storage tank. Ecoforest’s HK-Compact indoor units integrate the main components of the hydraulic circuit alongside a 165-litre stainless-steel storage tank, avoiding the need to install a separate tank, pump, expansion vessel and valves.

A cupboard, a space under the stairs, a utility room or the space previously occupied by your boiler is usually sufficient. In fact, the room that housed your old oil boiler will almost always have more than enough space.

4. Electrical installation

The ecoAIR+ range is available with single-phase (230 V) and three-phase (400 V) power supply, so most homes in Spain do not need to change their type of supply.

What you should check beforehand:

Contracted electrical capacity. Inverter technology modulates output from very low levels (the ecoAIR+ 1-7 PRO starts at 1 kW of thermal output), avoiding the large start-up peaks of on/off systems. Even so, if you plan to electrify the whole house (heating + domestic hot water + cooking + electric car), your electrician should recalculate the capacity required.

Electrical distribution board and earthing in good condition, with dedicated protection for the unit.

Appropriate cable cross-section for the run to the outdoor unit.

If you have or plan to install solar PV, the entire range includes the ecoSMART e-manager energy manager as standard. It converts surplus electricity into thermal energy (heating the storage tank or the thermal mass of the underfloor heating system) instead of exporting it to the grid. This is one reason why the combination of an air-to-water heat pump and solar power works so well: read our article on air-to-water heat pumps and solar panels.

5. Permits, building approval and noise

Single-family home: prior notification or a minor works permit from your local council is normally sufficient. Check beforehand, as requirements vary considerably between municipalities.

Flat or apartment building: installing a unit on a façade, in a shared courtyard or on a communal roof usually requires approval from the owners’ association. If the area is communal property, the decision is governed by Spain’s Horizontal Property Act. The situation is usually simpler on a terrace or balcony for private use, but it is still subject to the association’s rules.

Noise. Municipal regulations set noise limits for neighbouring homes, particularly at night. ecoAIR+ units have high-efficiency fans with variable-speed control and a quiet mode, but the location matters as much as the equipment: avoid placing the unit opposite a neighbour’s bedroom window.

Protected areas or historic districts: installation on façades visible from public streets may be restricted.

If you live in an apartment building, read our analysis of air-to-water heat pumps in shared buildings.

What work is needed, exactly?

It depends on what you already have. These are the three real-world scenarios:

Scenario A — You already have water-based heating (a gas or oil boiler)

This is the most common and simplest case. The work involves:

Removing the boiler and its flue or exhaust vent.

Installing the outdoor unit on a base.

Running the hydraulic lines between outdoors and indoors (through a wall chase or wall penetration).

Connecting to the existing radiator circuit.

Installing the indoor unit and domestic hot water storage tank.

Adapting the electrical installation.

Typical duration: 1-3 days. The floor is left untouched, the radiators are not replaced and the house is not torn apart. The oil tank also disappears, along with everything it entails (fuel deliveries, odours and burner maintenance).

Scenario B — A home without a water circuit (electric heating or split units)

Here, building work is necessary because a heat distribution system must be installed. The options, from least to most disruptive, are:

Fan coils with exposed pipes or pipes above a suspended ceiling: a moderate amount of work, without lifting floors.

New low-temperature radiators: localised work on the walls.

Underfloor heating: the most efficient and comfortable solution, but it involves lifting the floor covering. It only makes sense if you are already planning a renovation.

Scenario C — New build or complete renovation

The ideal scenario. Everything is sized from scratch, usually with underfloor heating, and the heat pump operates at a low temperature for maximum efficiency.

What if I live in a very cold area?

It is a legitimate concern: the heat pump draws energy from outdoor air, and the colder that air is, the harder it has to work.

Two technologies in the Ecoforest range address this:

DDC (Dynamic Defrost Cycle) system: defrosting is a traditional weak point of air-to-water heat pumps. DDC prevents the compressor from having to stop during the defrost cycle, shortening the cycle and maintaining the unit’s performance.

EVI technology: the ecoAIR+ EVI 4-20 model uses vapour injection, enabling it to maintain heating capacity down to an outdoor temperature of -25 °C.

The ecoAIR+ PRO range with R290 operates across a wide range of conditions without electric backup, producing hot water even in demanding conditions. That said, in climatic zone E under Spain’s Technical Building Code (CTE), the system should be sized with a greater margin. It is worth considering the EVI model or, if the site allows it, a ground-source heat pump, which uses a thermal source that remains stable throughout the year.

When an air-to-water heat pump is NOT the best option

We would rather be clear about this:

A home with very poor insulation and no plans to improve it. The heat pump will work, but demand will be so high that the savings will be eroded. Invest in windows and insulation before buying a more powerful unit.

A holiday home used very infrequently. The payback period becomes much longer if you use it for only fifteen days a year.

A physical or legal inability to install the outdoor unit. If the owners’ association prohibits it and there is no alternative, installation is not possible.

A severely undersized radiator system with no room to expand it. This can be resolved, but it makes the project more expensive.

Checklist: is my home suitable?

Tick the points that apply to you:

I have ~1 m² of ventilated outdoor space (terrace, garden, patio, roof or wall)

I have radiators, underfloor heating or fan coils (or can install them)

I have indoor space for the hydraulic module and domestic hot water storage tank

My electrical distribution board is in good condition and earthed

I can install the outdoor unit without conflicting with the owners’ association or municipal regulations

I know the condition of my home’s insulation

I know which services I want: heating, cooling, domestic hot water, swimming pool

Five or more boxes ticked: your home is suitable. The next step is a heat load assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Can an air-to-water heat pump be installed in an existing home? Yes. In fact, this is the most common scenario in Spain. If you already have water-based heating, replacing the boiler with an air-to-water heat pump takes only a few days. We cover this in depth in installing an air-to-water heat pump in an existing home.

Can an air-to-water heat pump be installed without building work? Without structural work, yes, provided there is an existing water circuit. You will need a wall penetration or chase for the hydraulic lines and may need to adapt the electrical distribution board, but there is no need to lift floors or knock down walls. Read air-to-water heat pumps in flats and homes without major building work.

What capacity do I need? It depends on the floor area, insulation, climatic zone and heat emitters, not just the number of square metres. The ecoAIR+ range covers from 1 kW to 24 kW in a single unit (ecoAIR+ 6-24 PRO), and up to 144 kW in a cascade configuration of up to six units. A heat load assessment is essential: oversizing is as harmful as undersizing.

Do I need a plant room? No. As it is a monobloc system, the indoor components consist of the hydraulic module and, optionally, the domestic hot water storage tank. They fit in a cupboard or the space previously occupied by the boiler.

Can it also provide cooling in summer? Yes. A single ecoAIR+ unit can provide heating, cooling, domestic hot water and swimming-pool temperature control. In summer, it reverses the cycle and extracts heat from inside the home.

How efficient is it really? Ecoforest air-to-water heat pumps achieve efficiencies of up to 400%: for every kW of electricity consumed, they generate between 3 and 5 kW of thermal output, depending on outdoor conditions and the installation.

Before asking for a quote, almost everyone asks the same question: will this work in my home?
